Ryan F. Osborne, MD is the Director of the Head and Neck Cancer Center and Director of Head and Neck Oncology in the Division of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the Cedar-Sinai Medical Center.  Dr. Osborne has trained extensively in head and neck oncology.  He has developed expertise in the management of all head and neck tumors with special interest in parotid, thyroid, and parathyroid tumors. He has innovated new approaches for the treatment of accessory parotid gland tumors which require no skin incisions. Dr. Osborne also uses minimally invasive techniques and cosmetic approaches in the care of patients with head and neck disorders. 

Dr. Osborne has trained extensively in head and neck oncology with pioneers such as Paul Donald MD, FRCS and Jimmy Brown, MD, DDS.  He completed a fellowship in advanced head and neck surgical oncology at UCLA Medical Center under the guidance of Thomas Calcaterra, MD, FACS.  There, he developed expertise in the management of all head and neck cancers including those that have failed conservative treatments. He is equally skilled in the reconstruction of large cancer defects utilizing various soft tissue flaps and prosthetics. Having trained at the University of Göttingen, Germany with Wolfgang Steiner, MD, Dr. Osborne seeks to provide oncologically sound surgery using endoscopic laser techniques and organ sparing approaches whenever appropriate. In addition, Dr. Osborne uses minimally invasive and video-assisted  techniques in the approach of patients with thyroid, parathyroid and parotid disorders.

Dr. Osborne's primary research interests include the genesis and progression of early head and neck cancers, and the development of innovative techniques and therapies for the management of parotid tumors. He is also developing protocols for home intravenous infusion therapies for head and neck cancer patients. He has presented his findings at numerous professional conferences and in peer-reviewed publications such as Cellular and Molecular Biology and Laryngoscope. He is currently the editor of the head and neck oncology segment for the ENT Journal.

Dr. Osborne is a board certified diplomate of the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and a member of the Society of University Otolaryngologists/Head and Neck Surgeons as well as the American College of Surgeons. He was recently inducted into the prestigious Triological Society for his work in the management of parotid cancer.  In the continued pursuit of excellence, Dr. Osborne travels locally and internationally to lecture, study, train and practice with other head and neck surgical pioneers

 

Jason S. Hamilton, M.D.

Jason S. Hamilton, MD is the Director of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for the Osborne Head and Neck Institute based at Cedar-Sinai Medical Towers. Dr. Hamilton has advanced training in plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques involving the face, head, and neck, and limits his practice to the treatment of these areas only. He completed a prestigious fellowship in facial plastics and reconstructive surgery awarded through the American Academy of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University where he also served as clinical faculty before joining the Head and Neck Institute.

Dr. Hamilton is a board certified diplomate of the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and a Member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.  He serves as clinical faculty in the Department of Surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He shares expertise in the treatment of parotid tumors with a special interest in the reconstruction of deformities caused by parotid surgery. As a result of his specialized training in facial plastic and cosmetic surgery, Dr. Hamilton is able to offer a full spectrum of surgical and nonsurgical treatments for the prevention and restoration of defects commonly caused from the treatment of head and neck tumorS.  Dr. Hamilton also has a busy cosmetic practice where he offers the latest in state of the art surgical and non-surgical techniques in facial rejuvenation. 

 

Garrett D. Herzon, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Herzon is an outstanding physician who listens carefully to his patient’s problems and conducts a scientific search for a diagnosis using the most current diagnostic modalities.  Dr. Herzon was trained in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago.  He then went on to complete a fellowship in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the Combined Societies of Head and Neck Cancer.

Dr. Herzon practiced for more than a decade as an academic surgeon while at Northwestern University Medical School before moving to Los Angeles.  Dr. Herzon has been awarded many grants and professional honors including the prestigious Whitaker Grant in Biomedical Engineering to develop an implantable laryngeal pacemaker for patients with vocal cord paralysis.  He continues his current research projects as a co-investigator on several National Institute of Health (NIH) grants.

Dr. Herzon is also an inventor of new medical instruments and is a recipient of 5 United States patents.  In addition to his accomplishments as a teacher, researcher, and scientist, Dr. Herzon has served as the Chairman of Quality Improvement for the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and the only Otolaryngologist serving as a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Practice Parameters Forum in Chicago five consecutive years.  Dr. Herzon has written over 25 papers and books in the field of Laryngology and presented over 35 scientific papers at national meetings and medical specialty organizations.  He presently serves as an Editor for the Ear, Nose, and Throat Journal, the most widely read academic journal in the field of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Herzon’s practice is limited to the medical treatments of ear, nose, and throat diseases.  His specialization is in laryngeal disorders and reflux manifestations of the throat and voice.  He was instrumental in establishing the Voice Clinic at Cedars-Sinai where he is a member of the medical consulting staff as well as a consultant to the Esophageal Disease Service at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.  He strives to provide expert non-surgical therapies and treatments to patients with voice disorders and reflux symptoms and disease.  His practice employs the most advanced digital imaging techniques allowing for accurate diagnosis of  disorders of the vocal cords (voice box).

 

Hans von Leden, MD

Co- Director- Neurolaryngology Division, Osborne Head and Neck Institute

He was born Hans-Viktor Ledermann 20 November 1918 in Breslau, Silesia, Germany, now Wroclaw, Poland. An entry in the Breslau City Directory for 1931 shows that his father, Dr. Peter P. Ledermann, lived at 15, Kaiser Wilhelmstrasse, and was an active physician on the staff of the Breslau hospitals. He was a distinguished member of the German medical profession and a renowned throat surgeon. Conversion to Catholicism failed to protect Dr, Ledermann from the depredations of the Nazis and they made their escape to New York City.

Records from Clongowes Wood College near Dublin, Ireland, show that Hans made his way alone to Ireland by way of Switzerland in 1935. In Dublin he enrolled in Clongowes Wood College and studied a year there before starting medical studies at National University of Ireland. He converted to Catholicism on 25 December 1938. After completing two years of the medical curriculum in 1939 his contacts with his new co-religionists, the Jesuits, secured for him and his father contacts in the USA among the Catholic medical community. He applied aand was enthusiastically recommended by his Irish teachers to Georgetown, Marquette and Loyola in Chicago. Armed with recommendations, Hans came to New York and worked at St. Francis Hospital, Jersey City, as an orderly while awaiting admission to medical school. His father passed the state board examination and was made a member of the faculty at Loyola Medical School in Chicago, while Hans was admitted to the junior class at Loyola Medical.

He was graduated with a medical degree from Loyola and received specialty training at Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago, and at the Mayo Clinic. He was called to active duty in the US Navy at the end of World War II. Upon release from active duty he joined the faculty of Loyola University. In 1951, he was given an appointment at Northwestern University Medical School. Sometime in Chicago he became "Leden."

He became Professor of Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA and adopted the Prussian honorific "von" to his name, becoming "Hans von Leden." In 1966, he became Professor of Bio-Communications at the University of Southern California and Director of Bio-communications and Director of the Institute of Laryngology and Voice Disorders in Los Angeles. He is the author of many scientific publications and was known internationally as “ Voice Doctor to the Stars”. He has been decorated by the German government among others, and wears the Justice Cross of the Order, which requires 4 generations of noble ancestors.

 

Sofia Avitia, MD

Rhinology and Sinus Surgery

Sofia Avitia, M.D. practices general pediatric and adult otolaryngology at the Osborne Head and Neck Institute.  Dr. Avitia enjoys treating the full range of medical and surgical disorders affecting the ears, nose, and throat.   Her areas of special interest include rhinology and sinus disease, and surgical treatment of snoring and sleep disorders. 

Dr. Avitia’s research interest is in the arena of health disparities in head and neck cancer and she has presented her findings at both regional and national meetings.  She is a regular contributor to the Head and Neck Clinic, a monthly segment in the ENT Journal. She has published over 25 articles and manuscripts.  In addition to her multiple publications, she has also served as a reviewer for the Journal of the National Medical Association. Although a native of California, she is interested in international medicine and is currently fluent in 3 languages – English, Spanish and French.

Dr. Sofia Avitia obtained her medical degree from the Drew/UCLA School of Medicine, her general surgery training year at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center and then completed her residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the Charles R. Drew School of Medicine and Science.  She is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, National Medical Association, the Los Angeles Otolaryngology Medical Society and the American College of Surgeons.

 

Lorraine M. Smith, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Associate Director - Pediatric Division, Osborne Head and Neck Institute

Lorraine M. Smith, MD, MPH, FACS is a board certified Otolaryngologist who has been practicing Pediatric Otolaryngology for the last 9 years. Dr. Smith received her Bachelor's degree (summa cum laude) from the Howard University College of Liberal Arts where she became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She also graduated from the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. She completed an internship in General Surgery at the Howard University Hospital, and then her residency in Otolaryngology at the Charles R. Drew University.  Post-residency, Dr. Smith earned a Master's degree in Public Health (MPH) at UCLA, where she also recently completed a fellowship in Medical Education.

She spent the last few years providing care to pediatric and adult otolaryngology patients as a member of the Cedars Sinai Medical Group.  Prior to this, she taught Otolaryngology to medical students and residents in the Drew/UCLA program, while developing expertise in the care of Pediatric Otolaryngology patients and in her Gardena private practice. Her commitment to excellence is reflected in her receipt of numerous academic and community awards, most recently the "Award for Excellence in Medical Education" from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA - Department of Surgery and the Charles R. Drew University - Department of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Smith holds professional memberships in multiple local and national organizations committed to advancing the care of Otolaryngology patients and medical care in California. These include the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, the California Medical Association and the Los Angeles Otolaryngology Medical Society, the Los Angeles County Medical Association. She is also a member of the Society of University Otolaryngologists.

While Dr Smith's clinical interests include the comprehensive care of patients with pediatric and general Otolaryngology problems including airway disorders and repair, sleep and sinus disorders as well as management of pediatric head and neck tumors. She is skilled in the use of the Coblator radiofrequency unit for tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies as well as turbinate resections. She also performs thyroidectomies and minimally invasive parathyroid surgery. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed publications, including Topics in Emergency Medicine, ENT Journal and Cellular and Molecular Biology. Dr. Smith is also interested in using technology to improve the delivery of healthcare and as such has worked with the Drew Urban Telemedicine Center of Excellence in its efforts to improve the delivery of health to urban communities.

 

Eugene Flaum, MD

Director - Pediatric Division, Osborne Head and Neck Institute

Dr. Eugene Flaum completed his undergraduate and graduate training in the Biological Sciences at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He then went on to medical school at the same institution and graduated in 1964. He started a rotating internship, followed by a residency program in Pediatrics during which he was drafted by the U.S. Army as a pediatrician during the Vietnam war.

After a year of pediatric service, caring for military families, he was deployed to Vietnam, and remained there from 1967 through 1968.  He directed the care at a 750 patient Vietnamese Provincial Hospital, the local troop dispensary, while spending numerous hours as an “ambassador” to military leaders, visiting members of the press, senators as well as working closely with members of many volunteer organizations.  He was decorated with the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service.

Upon his return to USC, he completed one year at Cedars of Lebanon as a surgical resident, then went on to complete and graduate from the Otolaryngology residency program at Los Angeles/USC Medical Center.  In 1972, he started in private practice as an Otolaryngologist caring primarily for children. He spent over 20 years on staff at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.  Dr Flaum has been a member of the Pediatric and Department of  Surgery faculty at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) for almost 35 years caring for pediatric patients with complex otolaryngologic disorders while teaching students and residents of the medical center and UCLA.  He is also a member of the volunteer Otolaryngology faculty, Department of Surgery of the University of Southern California.  He has held many positions at Cedars including Vice Chief of staff, Chairman of the division of Otolaryngology, a long time member of the Medical Executive committee, the Surgical as well as the Pediatric advisory committees, Chairman of the Credentials Committee, Director of the Pediatric Otolaryngology clinic. He remains a member of the CSMC Pediatric Craniofacial team while maintaining a busy medical and surgical practice.

Dr Flaum is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Los Angeles Otolaryngology Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Los Angeles County Medical Association. He has presented at numerous meetings of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngologists. He has authored many scientific articles and book chapters. His clinical interests include the comprehensive otolaryngologic care of pediatric patients with complex airway issues, craniofacial syndromes, dwarfism and hereditary hearing disorders.
